A two-bedroom apartment in Darlinghurst’s Horizon has sold for a record-breaking price, and the buyer is someone very familiar with the award-winning building.
The level 32 unit at 3203/184 Forbes St, which had a guide of $3.5m, fetched $3.85m prior to Tuesday’s scheduled auction through Josh Allen and Ryan Rubinstein of JT Allen.
The property last traded for $1.26m in 2006, so it has more than trebled in value in 16 years.
Both agents were tongue-tied on the identity of the purchaser, though other sources confirmed it was the executive chairman of marketing firm IVE Group, Geoff Selig, who last month sold his combined apartments on the 34th floor for $8m, with the price reflecting a record rate per square metre.
Selig’s previous apartment, which sold through Richardson & Wrench Elizabeth Bay’s Jason Boon, had offered a whopping 225 sqm of living space and had incredible views of the city skyline, Bridge and Opera House and north to the heads and ocean.
His new apartment, which records show is currently owned by executive and business coach Denis Taylor and his partner Craig Williams, is considerably smaller at just 95 sqm, but it has the same extraordinary views.

Selig is now spending more time at his property in the Southern Highlands and no longer needed the larger property, but he was keen to retain a bolthole at Horizon.
Rubinstein said the level 32 unit had been popular, attracting interest from empty-nesters and downsizers, expats and investors.
“We had about 200 inquiries and more than 30 inspections … it has one of the best layouts in the building; the view of the Bridge and Opera House that everyone wants and two car spots, which is rare for a two-bedder,” he said.
Selig, who is a former NSW Liberal Party president, had bought his previous apartment for $5.5m from professor of linguistics Jack Richards and his partner, Won Gyu Moon.
Horizon, designed by Harry Seidler, offers 24-hour concierge and video intercom; a 25m outdoor heated swimming pool, gym and tennis court, tropical gardens and a common barbecue area ideal for entertaining.
Media heiress Francesca Packer-Barham bought the level-40 penthouse in Horizon for $16m in 2019.
But, interestingly, Rubinstein said the most desirable apartments in Horizon are located between levels 19 and 34. The balconies are too windy to use in the higher-up apartments.
Many of those interested in the two-bedder were already living in the building.
